A Humble Kingdom

Nov 23, 2025    Ron Zimmer

This exploration of Luke 17 challenges us to reconsider what it truly means to live as people who have been bought with a price. We're confronted with Jesus' radical teaching about servanthood—not the modern idea of being appreciated for our work, but the ancient reality of belonging completely to someone else. The historical context reveals something profound: in the ancient world, slavery wasn't always about oppression but often about debt relief, where people sold themselves to escape crushing financial burdens. Jesus uses this imagery to help us understand our spiritual position. We didn't just get a little help from God; we were completely bankrupt, unable to pay the debt of our sin. Christ paid it all, purchasing us entirely. This means we don't serve God to earn His favor—we serve because we already belong to Him. The message isn't about guilt but about right-sizing our egos and recognizing the truth: we are servants who have simply done our duty. Yet here's the beautiful paradox: the God who owns us completely also calls us friends. When we embrace this humble position, we discover true freedom. We stop performing for applause and start living with gratitude. We stop climbing ladders to impress others and start kneeling in thankfulness to the One who lifted us from our debt and gave us eternal life.
